New Delhi, Sep 12 No licence will be required to wheel in electric energy from customs bound SEZs even when the government has said it will amend the policy for imports of power and subject it to licence regime.
For import of electricity energy, Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said it would issue licence in consultation with ministries of External Affairs, Power and Commerce.
"However, import from SEZ units will be free,"the DGFT notification said.
Earlier, DGFT had said the import policy for the electric energy will be amended.
India imports electricity from countries like Bhutan, but the government wants to ensure that when power is wheeled into the country, domestic guidelines are followed.
India has financed power projects in Bhutan and in turn imports electricity from the neighbouring country.
New Delhi is also keen on enhancing co-operation with Nepal and Myanmar in the area of hydro-electric power.
