Subject: Each SEZ promoter wants 500 crore compensation: GIDC
PANAJI: At a press conference to announce the Goa Industrial Development Corporation's (GIDC) approval to set up one new unit and to expand four major industries, including Bosch India limited, at various industrial estates in Goa, the GIDC board of directors, on Monday, were quizzed over whether they would pay compensation to SEZ promoters.

Stating that the corporation has not thought about the issue yet, GIDC managing director A D Naik said that each of the promoters were demanding compensation, including damages, to the tune of 500 crore, when the GIDC has got just about 50 crore from them. He also said that with land locked in the SEZs, over 250 fresh applications for plots are pending before the GIDC.

GIDC also freed more space at the Pilerne industrial estate for the expansion project of another unit. GIDC chairperson ChandrakantKawlekar said the corporation has decided to allot 16,000 square metres of land at Pilerne for the expansion of Unichem Laboratories Limited.

The GIDC board of directors also approved the expansion plans of Siemens in their gas insulator sub-station and relay panel project at Verna on 10,000 square metres of land. The expansion plans of power cable manufacturer Teracom Limited at Kundaim industrial estate has also been approved.

Naik also said that the board has approved the setting up of a new unit by Dazzler Confectionary company limited to manufacture hard candy lollipop at Verna industrial estate.

Additionally, the GIDC has taken administrative approval for a sum of 4.26 crore for upgrading infrastructure at various industrial estates in Goa.

Kawlekar said the board also considered granting extension to the one-time-settlement scheme for payment of installment for plots. This was a request from various units but the board deferred a decision on this matter until its next meeting. Kawlekar said a total of 7.21 crore is outstanding.
