Subject: Tomato prices drop, onions still cost same
NAVI MUMBAI: The whole sale and retail prices of tomatoes has dipped to Rs 10 and Rs 20 per kg respectively in the APMC market with the arrival of surplus produce from Bangalore and Narayangaon. Earlier this week, they were sold at Rs 20 and Rs 40 in the wholesale and retail markets.

"Currently, over 50 to 60 truckloads of good quality tomatoes hit the whole sale market every day. With more supply and less demand, the prices have dipped. Consumers are privileged to cheaper prices and the trend will continue for the next few weeks," said Arvind yadav, a wholesaler.

On the flipside, onion prices have remained as high as Rs 50 per kg in the retail market. "We have got a breather from the low cost tomatoes that has flooded the market these days but we are concerned about rising prices of most important kitchen staple onion," said a homemaker, Saraswati Rao. The corresponding wholesale price is between Rs 35 and Rs 40.

Traders say that bulk import from neighbouring China and Pakistan along with the release of stock in the domestic market will help reduce onion prices.

Potato and green chilli prices have been stable at Rs 20 and Rs 50 per kg in the last couple of weeks with new crops from Satara, Sangli, Nashik, Bangalore and Haveri arriving at the wholesale market.

Other vegetables are within the affordable limit with fresh monsoon crops coming in and are being sold within the range of Rs 30 and 60 per kg in retail markets. The prices of ginger and garlic are Rs 120 and Rs 150 per kg respectively, which is slightly lesser than the prices last month.
