The Indian government is likely to impose safeguard duty on certain aluminium products on the recommendations of the Director General of Safeguard, in order to protect domestic industry from cheap imports. Flat-rolled aluminium products are widely used in aluminium foil that is increasingly consumed by the packaging industry. The proposed safeguard duty on flat-rolled items is 21 per cent while that on foil is 35 per cent. Safeguard duty is a temporary protectionist measure, which is brought in for a certain timeframe to avert any damage to the domestic industry from cheap imports. The Directorate General of Safeguards and Customs and Central Excise that initiated a probe into cheap arrival of aluminium products to India, had recommended to the Committee of Secretaries (CoS) for imposing ad-valorem provisional safeguard duty for 200 days.
