India Considering Import Duty on Power Equipment - Report |
Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs said that government may consider levying import duty on power equipment.
Earlier, a committee of secretaries had proposed to impose 5% customs duty, 10% CVD and 4% SAD on imported power equipment to provide a level playing filed to the domestic industry and give a boost to domestic production of power equipment.
The proposal is being examined by the power ministry for finalizing a cabinet note on the subject.
It is also being learnt that already awarded mega projects as well as ultra mega power projects would be exempt. This means that National Thermal Power Corporation's bulk tender and Barethi project in Bundelkhand will be exempt.
Also, sources inform that the 5% price preference which is currently given to domestic companies will be withdrawn.
