NEW DELHI: Government's telecom R&D wing Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT ) is "aggressively pushing" its locally developed products which could support the private sector telecom service providers in rolling out broadband services.

"The widespread smartphone adoption is generating broadband traffic today. Average speeds are growing fast and markets are realizing the need of ultra-fast broadband access," said Vipin Tyagi, executive director at C-DoT.

The government agency, founded in 1984, recently showcased its product portfolio to private telecom players and Internet service providers, including roaming solutions, 4G-LTE and GPON (Gigabit Passive Optic Network), public Wi-Fi hotspots and campus networks.

"We are readying solutions for telecom service providers that include LTE, softswitch, aggregator, router and media gateway, and launching IP-RAN (Radio Access Network) and mobile antenna that can make Wi-Fi calls as well as end-to-end rural BPO solution," Tyagi said.

C-DoT is also overhauling its marketing and sales strategy and is expected to adopt an aggressive model for technology transfer and extend its custom manufacturing capabilities.

Currently, it has undertaken R&D activity in areas such as machine-to-machine communications (M2M), Internet of Things (IoT), LTE macro cell, green technology and E-band systems.

C-DoT has also developed cost-effective Broadband Wireless Technology (BBWT) and shared GSM-Radio Access Network to facilitate wireless connectivity in India's rural and remote regions where, it said, operators are hesitant to go due to commercial unviability.

The government's telecom R&D unit is also optimistic about domestic manufacturing and believes that taking indigenous technologies to manufacturers would help save forex and could drastically cut the country's electronics import bill.

Indian companies that design, manufacture and have intellectual property rights hold less than 5 per cent share of the Rs 50,000-crore telecom equipment market, according to the Telecom Systems Design and Manufacturing Association ( TSDMA).

Due to absence of domestic telecom gear manufacturing, Indian service operators are highly skewed towards imports from China's Huawei and ZTE as well as Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks, Alcatel-Lucent for their equipment needs.
