Piyush Goyal urges power producers to stop coal imports |
VADODARA: Power and coal minister Piyush Goyal has urged power generating companies to stop importing coal in view of the accumulated coal stocks at Coal India pitheads.
Addressing a two-day conference of state energy and mines ministers on Friday, Goyal said the coal ministry is working very actively on coal imports substitution and many states and government companies are already on board.
“I urge all of you to stop coal imports. I will also hold dialogue with private companies to see how to stop coal imports to the highest extent possible,” he said.
Several thermal power plants in the country are designed to use high grade imported coal.
Goyal said Coal India can make available higher grades of coal to substitute coal imports.
