Coal imports rise 6.5 times in 7 years |
NEW DELHI: India's coal imports surged 6.5 times in the last 7 years and the country is likely to source 82 million tonnes of the fuel in the current financial year.
"It can be seen that import of coal has been increasing over the last few years, due to shortage of domestic coal which means loss of valuable forex. It is also contributing to the current account deficit and adversely impacting the power distribution companies," a senior power ministry official said.
The quantity of imported coal for the year 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 has been 30 million tonnes, 45 million tonnes and 63 million tonnes respectively.
