The rupee on Tuesday depreciated by 24 paise against the dollar in early trade amid weakness in the equity markets.
At the Interbank Foreign Exchange market, the domestic unit was quoted 24 paise lower at 46.91 a dollar in early trade. The rupee had closed lower by 11 paise at 46.77/78 a dollar in the previous session on Monday.
Forex dealers said apart from the weak trend on the stock markets, demand for the U.S. currency from importers also kept pressure on the rupee.
The Bombay Stock Exchange index, Sensex, fell by 46.53 points, or 0.26 per cent to 17,890.67 points in the early trade.
