Rupee trades lower at 68.60 against US dollar |
Mumbai: The Indian rupee on Wednesday weakened against the dollar, tracking losses in the Asian market.
The local unit opened at 68.52 per dollar. At 9.12 am, the home currency was trading at 68.60 down 0.32% from its previous close of 68.38 for the first time since 4 September 2013.
Among Asian currencies, Malaysian ringgit lost 1.206%, South Korean won 0.570%, Indonesian rupiah 0.675%, Taiwan dollar 0.334%, Philippines peso 0.336%, China offshore 0.147%, China renminbi 0.138% and Thai baht 0.028%. Japanese Yen gained 0.018%, Hong Kong dollar 0.006% and Singapore dollar rose 0.028%.
The Sensex index gained 0.20% or 45.43 points to 23,237.40 points in pre-opening trade.
The yield on India’s 10-year benchmark bond was trading at 7.778% against Tuesday’s close of 7.783%. Bond yields and prices move in opposite directions.
Since the beginning of this year, the rupee has lost 3.54%, while foreign institutional investors have sold $1.4 billion from local equity and bond markets.
The dollar index, which measures the US currency’s strength against major currencies, was trading at 96.857, down 0.01% from the previous close of 96.868.
