MUMBAI: The rupee appreciated by 17 paise to 44.77 against the US dollar in the early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange today on capital inflows into equities by foreign funds.
The US currency's losses against other major currencies also supported the rupee.
Forex dealers said fresh capital inflows into equities by foreign funds kept the rupee sentiment firm.
The rupee had ended 21 paise higher at 44.94/95 against the dollar in the previous session.
Meanwhile, the Bombay Stock Exchange index Sensex rose 115.72 points to 20,184.84 points in the opening trade.
