Govt lays down conditions for ports on metallic scrap import.

Date: 08-10-2016
Subject: Govt lays down conditions for ports on metallic scrap import
Any sea port to be designated for import of un-shredded metallic scrap will have to install radiation portal monitors and container scanner with adequate security, the commerce ministry said on Friday.

Listing the conditions governing clearance of imports of the scrap by sea ports, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) also said the existing 14 designated ports, including JNPT, Kandla, Paradip and Mumbai, will be allowed to import these till March 31, 2017.

By this time, they are required to install and operationalise radiation portal monitors and container scanner.

“Such sea ports which fail to meet the deadline will be derecognised for the purpose of import of un-shredded metallic scrap with effect from April 1, 2017,” DGFT said in a public notice.

It said only entry sea ports will be designated and notified for imports of these scraps. The procedure for designating ports for imports of un-shredded metallic scarp and handling of such items by inland container depots (ICDs) is also prescribed.

Sea ports after having installed the monitors and scanners will have to approach jurisdictional Customs for inspection and certification.

The Customs may give necessary clearance on receipt of certification from AERB (the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board). On getting clearance from the Customs, DGFT will notify such a port as a designated one for scrap import.
