Clamour for advance food imports grows |
Finance minister Arun Jaitley may make light of the growing concerns over deficient rain predicted by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) for June-September period but economists believe the government needs to put well in advance a supply-side management plan in place to minimise its impact.
D K Srivastava, chief policy advisor at consulting firm EY Indian Llc, who estimates agricultural output to dip 1-1.5% due to a 12-15% shortfall in rains, said besides other measures, the government needed to act quickly on a supply-side management strategy to avoid higher cost of food imports.
