Subject: Kerala far behind in export of ayurvedic medicines
KANNUR: The Ayurveda Medical Association of India (AMAI), the organisation of the ayurvedic doctors in the state, said that Kerala was much behind when it comes to research institutions in ayurveda and also export of ayurvedic medicines, though the state is said to be the hub of ayurvedic treatment.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, the association office-bearers said the AMAI would discuss many such issues in its annual council meeting to be held in Kannur on Sunday.

"There is immense potential for ayurvedic treatment and also manufacturing of ayurvedic medicines in Kerala, which would also help the economic development of the state," said P Mohanan, working chairman of the organizing committee.

The meeting will also discuss the existing proposal for an ayurvedic research centre, setting up of ayurvedic university, development of ayurveda with the help of the state and central projects and subjects related to the sector, said the committee.

The meet would also discuss many important aspects of the sector, including ayurvedic tourism, preservation of herbs, preventing the spread of lifestyle diseases through effective intervention, they added.

It also said that the governments should take steps to prevent the advertisement of ayurvedic preparations with fake claims by implementing the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act.

The meet would be inaugurated by minister for health K K Shailaja. MP P K Sreemathi will deliver the keynote address.

Minister for ports Ramachandran Kadannappally will distribute the awards instituted by AMAI in various fields.
