India expects to export more pomegranates to Russia |
The Indian pomegranate season has been running for almost two months now and it said to be on-line with last year, regarding volumes expected. The main volumes are going to East Asia - Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong and Indonesia. There is nothing going to Europe or Russia.
Nagesh Shetty from Deccan Produce, said this is due to the small size of the fruit at this time of year, it is a normal progression of the season to start shipping to Europe in December and January when the fruit is bigger and so more attractive to the market there.
Nagesh hopes to double the volume of pomegranates exported this year compared to last year. He said that at the moment Europe is getting pomegranates from Egypt and Turkey, which are very competitive and have good sized fruit.
He also expect that India will be shipping more to Russia this year despite the fact that it is also supplied by Peru and Israel who are not affected by the import ban.
