Subject: India-EU trade put firmly on track, big news expected within this year
Business ties between India and EU have been firmly put on the track and big news on the trade front is expected this year itself, Reuters and other agencies reported on February 28.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Friday their commitment to finalise a free trade agreement (FTA) within this year.

The EU is India's largest trading partner in goods, with bilateral trade anticipated to reach $137.5 billion in the 2023-24 fiscal year, reflecting a remarkable growth of nearly 90% over the last decade. The discussions surrounding the India-EU free trade agreement, which had been stagnant for eight years, were revived in 2021 and now encompass topics such as investment protection and geographical indications.

Leyen is currently in India for a two-day visit, which began on Thursday, accompanied by leaders from various EU member states. This visit coincides with rising geopolitical tensions, providing an opportunity for Brussels and New Delhi to identify critical areas for enhanced cooperation within their strategic partnership.

Speaking at a business conference, Leyen highlighted that challenging times can pave the way for stronger collaboration between India and the EU. She noted, “Prime Minister Modi and I have agreed to work toward concluding a free trade pact this year.”

Leyen emphasized the mutual risks of a fragmented world marked by spheres of influence and isolationism, stating, “We both stand to lose in such a scenario, but we stand to gain from a framework of cooperation and collaboration.”

She also remarked that the current dynamics of great power competition present a chance for both Europe and India to rethink and strengthen their partnership.
