PANAJI: Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) remains the largest exporter of naval vessels in the country, helping boost not only the defence public sector unit's bottom line, but also helping forge bilateral ties and defence cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region, said the Union ministry of defence.
In recognition of the efforts made by the Vasco-based shipyard, the defence ministry recently awarded GSL the Rakhsha Mantri award for being the best performing shipyard in 2015-16 and for best performance in exports in 2014-15. It also won accolades for designing an anti-submarine shallow water vessel.
The yard has seen just over 30% of its turnover coming through exports to friendly nations.
Chairman and managing director Shekhar Mital expressed optimism that the recent awards would help GSL bag further contracts for vessels.
