Subject: Centre's skills training to include AI courses
Eyeing global demand for skilled workforce in the areas of artificial intelligence, the ministry of skills development and entrepreneurship will soon undertake revamp of its existing courses and introduce new courses related to artificial intelligence to meet the industry future requirement.

A sixteen-member committee has been formed under the chairmanship of Neena Pahuja, executive member of the National Council for Vocational Education and Training, to devise courses and estimate cost of training in AI related courses besides preparing guidelines for various skilling bodies.

The committee consists of members from stakeholder ministries including Meity, industry representatives as well as members of the related sector skill councils, including IT and telecom, who are responsible for imparting training in the areas of AI.

The committee is expected to submit its recommendations by June 20 following which the ministry will undertake restructuring of its existing courses and formulate new courses.

The roadmap for AI-specific skills training will reinforce the ‘skilling in AI’ component of the National Programme on Artificial Intelligence (NPAI), launched by Meity, as part of its India AI programme, the ministry said.

“The committee will assess the current and future demand of AI trained manpower across sectors and review and analyze the status of existing NSQF aligned and approved Al related qualifications,” it said in an office memorandum, seen by ET.

The committee will also identify the areas and sub-areas around AI and its application across sectors where the skill courses can be developed for NSQF alignment, approval and certifications while developing a basic course on AI and Data Sciences to be taught at all skilling candidates across lTls.

The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report of 2023 says AI and technology will add 97 million new jobs while displacing 85 million traditional jobs by 2025.

The International Data Corporation forecasts the overall AI software market to be $791.5 billion in revenue by 2025 with a CAGR of 18.4%. However, the AI-centric part is estimated to be $192.6 billion at a CAGR of 31.2% by 2026.
