NEW DELHI: Vegetable oil imports by India increased by 48 per cent at 7.62 lakh tonnes in February, compared with 5.15 lakh tonnes in the same month last year, an industry body said on Monday.
Releasing the data, Mumbai-based Solvent Extractors' Association said the import of vegetable oils sharply increased in the first four months of the 2008-09 oil year (November-October) following higher consumption due to a major drop in international and domestic prices.
The overall between November 2008 and February this year has gone up by 68 per cent to 29.51 lakh tonnes, compared with 17.61 lakh tonnes in the same period in the previous year.
