Coonoor, Oct. 26 Tea import into the country increased Rs 29.12 crore in the first eight months of the calendar year compared with the same period a year ago.
An analysis of the latest data available with Tea Board shows that this was due to higher volume of imports at a higher price.
Between January and August, India imported 1.58 crore kg against 1.27 crore kg in the corresponding period a year ago. It paid Rs 10 a kg more to average the price at Rs 83.50.
Total bill
In all, the import bill totalled Rs 132.12 crore (Rs 93 crore). Imports were made from about 15 countries, some only trading sources, not manufacturing.
Volume-wise, the highest volume of 4.88 million kg (last year: 5.12 million kg) came from Nepal.
