Coonoor, March 26The country’s tea import bill has almost doubled in January over 2008, according to the latest data of Tea Board. India could get teas for an average price of Rs 69.64 a kg, around Rs 2 lower than January 2008 encouraging more imports. The imported volume rose to 1.73 million kg from 0.89 million kg, an increase of over 94 per cent.
The overall import bill increased to Rs 12.04 crore from Rs 6.34 crore.
Country-wise imports
India imported tea from a dozen countries including some trading origins. The largest volume of 4.41 lakh kg (January 2008: 2.68 lakh kg) came from Nepal. Imports from Vietnam totalled 3.76 lakh kg (38,000 kg) and Indonesia 3.03 lakh kg (2.61 lakh kg).
