India should impose a ban on iron ore exports to preserve the non-renewable resource for the local industry, a Press Trust of India report carried by the Business Standard newspaper said on Tuesday citing the steel secretary.
"It will be good to completely ban iron ore exports as these are non-renewable resources," the report quoted Atul Chaturvedi as saying.
About half of India's iron ore output is exported mainly to China that houses the world's largest steel industry.
India produced 226 million tonnes of iron ore in the fiscal year ended March, compared with 215 million tonnes in the prior year, the mines ministry data showed.
