Colombo, Feb 23 (PTI) Facing a shortage of "essential drugs" in its hospitals, Sri Lanka will import the medicines from India within 10 days.
Measures will be taken to overcome the shortage of essential drugs in the country's hospitals, Acting Secretary to the Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition, Nihal Jayatillake, said, adding the required medicines will now be imported from India.
He pointed out that the shortage of essential drugs was reported by hospitals and other concerned authorities during a meeting early this week.
A discussion was held with Health Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva in this connection and the Cabinet approval obtained to import the necessary drugs from India.
Jayatillake said that 80 per cent of the required drugs anyway are currently being imported from India, an official website reported.
