In view of the declining trend in the export of oilmeals for the month of February 2009, the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEAI) has decided to step up promotional efforts to check the declining trend and is planning to depute a Trade Delegation in the second half of May 2009 to some of the key markets in South-East Asia to maintain India's share in world market and to develop new markets like Cambodia, Laos and Philippines for oilmeals.
A report published last month by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA) shows that in last few months export of oilmeals have declined sharply due to various reasons. The export of oilmeals is reported at 440,795 tonnes compared to 763,047 tonnes in February 2008, down by 42%.
The report says overall export of oilmeals for the period April 2008 to February 2009 (11 months) is reported at 5,057,784 tonnes compared to 4,588,457 tonnes that is up by 10%. The export in the first two quarters jumped due to excellent demand and FOB realisation. However, in the third quarter it got stagnated and in the last two months declined heavily due to stagnation in production of meat and poultry worldwide following financial crisis and pronounced slowdown in economic activity affected consumer demand for livestock products.
The FOB earning during February 2009 is Rs 790 crore and total FOB earning from April 2008 to February 2009 is estimated at Rs 7790 crore. Average International Prices in February '09 compared to August 2008 for soya bean meal reduced over 18%, rapeseed meal over 29%, groundnut meal 26%, rice bran extract 20% and castor seed extract 52%, the report pointed out.
Oilmeal import by Vietnam from India for the period April 2007 to February 2009 is reported at 1,372,205 tonnes compared to 1,467,278 tonnes last year, consisting of 1,208,333 tonnes of soya bean meal, 52,885 tonnes of rapeseed meal and entire 110,673 tonnes of rice bran extraction. South Korea reported import of 767,079 tonnes compared to 841,575 tonnes of last year, consisting of 338,036 tonnes of rapeseed meal, 243,649 tonnes of soya bean meal and 185,394 tonnes of castor seed meal. Japan again emerged as big importer and bought 765,027 tonnes compared to 608,175 tonnes last year consisting of 758,054 tonnes of soya bean meal and 6,973 tonnes of rapeseed meal during April 2008 to February 2009.
The export from Kandla is reported at 2,908,774 tonnes (58%), followed by Mumbai including JNPT which handled 1,008,307 tonnes (20%), Bedi 519,777 tonnes (10%), Vizag handled 278,613 tonnes (5.5%), Mundra handled 194,997 tonnes (4%), Kakinada 84,858 tonnes (2%) and Kolkata 54,413 tonnes ( 1%), it is learnt from the report.
