Protein supplements, cigarettes seized from customs depot |
Jaipur: The Jaipur branch of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) raided a customs depot in Jodhpur and seized 2 million US-made cigarette sticks and 36 cartons of protein supplements made in Korea and Indonesia.
The consignment was being smuggled under the guise of glassware import through sea route from Dubai. A Delhi-based smuggler was to receive it at Jodhpur, but the DRI seized the goods before it was cleared by the customs. A case has been registered in this regard and the DRI has launched a search for the importer.
Sources said that the seizure was made at Jodhpur's Thar dry port by a DRI team on Monday night. The DRI had received a tip-off about the consignment and before it reached the custom clearance point, the DRI sleuths searched it.
The declared good was glassware, but upon a thorough search, the boxes were found stuffed with cigarette packets and protein supplements in huge quantity.
The majority of cigarette packets had no health warning printed on them. Although some packets had warning, it did not meet the guidelines specified by the Supreme Court in this regard.
The DRI team waited for the Delhi-based man at the depot to claim the consignment throughout the night, but he did not turn up, sources said.
During preliminary investigation, it has come to fore that the packets reached Pipavav Port in Gujarat and from there first reached Ahembabad and then Jodhpur's Thar dry port by road. The DRI is yet to determine the value of the goods, but it may well run into crores, sources said.
