Over 53 pc Increase in Total Exports of Gems, Jewels: GJEPC |
Chennai,(PTI) The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) today said the country has registered an over 53 per cent increase in total exports of gems and jewels this year during April-August at Rs 70,113 crore.
During April-August 2009 India had registered exports of gems and jewels worth about Rs 45,700 crore, GJEPC Regional Chairman Princeson Jose said.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a GJEPC-sponsored upgradation programme for jewellers here, he said that expectations of exports for the rest of the year are ''good.''
Diamonds and gold jewellery are exported to many nations, including USA, UK, Japan and Hong Kong among others, he said. To a query, he said India plans to export designer jewellery as well.
On domestic trends, he said that the current festive season will see increase in sale of gold and the price of the yellow metal is likely to go upwards due to demand.
