Omfed plans new plant at Barang in 2 years, exports |
Bhubaneswar: The Orissa State Cooperative Milk Producers' Federation (Omfed) has planned to set up a five lakh litre ultramodern dairy plant near Trisulia in Cuttack district in two years.
The Omfed is also gearing up to export milk and milk products to Russia, Bangladesh and Myanmar for the benefit of Odisha farmers. "As Bangladesh is an emerging market, our products will find many takers there," said Omfed managing director Bishnupada Sethi.
The Trisulia plant will be an automated one, involving less manpower, like the ones in Gujarat and other places of the country. It will process milk and produce milk products effectively and quickly compared to that in the old plants of Omfed in the state.
Sethi told TOI that 51 acres have been demarcated near Barang in Cuttack district for the project. "We will finalize the blueprint of the plant very soon at a high-level meeting," he added. After establishment of the plant, Sethi said procurement of milk by Omfed will touch 10 lakh litres a day. It will help milk farmers, retailers and consumers of the state, said Sethi.
The cooperative major has also planned to tie up with the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (Nafed) for tea marketing. It has also decided to introduce hot milk at its kiosks in the evening.
The Omfed recently started selling bread and sweets like rasgulla and gulab jamun at its kiosks.
Omfed's general manager (marketing) Basant Mishra said the cooperative is marketing around 5, 10,000 litres of milk and milk products per day in the state. Of the volume, 1, 25,000 litres of milk and its products are being marketed by the retailers in the city alone. The sale figure of Bhubaneswar market is likely to go up to 1, 60,000 litres a day in near future, he added.
"We are toying with the idea to increase our market base in and outside the state," said the general manager.
