NEW DELHI, March 27 (Reuters) - No decision has been made yet on whether to allow state-run trading firms or private mills to import white sugar at zero duty, Trade Secretary G.K. Pillai said on Friday.
"The issue is before the cabinet and the cabinet will decide," Pillai told reporters when asked if private traders would be allowed to import white sugar.
Currently, imports of whites attract a duty of 60 percent.
Farm Minister Sharad Pawar on Wednesday told Reuters in an interview that the country may not need white sugar imports as domestic prices had dropped.
