Subject: Leather Sector Eyes France to Spur Exports
Leather item producers and exporters in India, aiming to boost their exports, both in terms of value and volume, are now eyeing the French market. As stated by the Council for Leather Exports (CLE), France’s increasing dependence on imports, particularly for luggage and other leather items means to a extent a great deal of business opportunities for all developing countries like India.

French leather market is a major player in world leather market; the CLE officials stated and added that, with a 2.3 percent contribution to global imports, it is the 10th largest importer of leather items, and also its fourth biggest exporter with a share of more than 4.5 percent in global exports. Italy, China, Turkey, US and Germany are the major importers of leather and leather products from France, while its major exporters includes US, Spain, Australia, Zimbabwe and Germany.

Presently, of India’s overall exports of leather items, 6.9 percent is towards France, CLE stated. Amongst other major exporters of leather products from India are with Germany accounting for 12.73 percent of total exports, UK 12.52 percent, Italy 11.74 percent, US 9.06 percent, Hong Kong 10.99 percent, Spain 6.48 percent, Netherlands 3.31 percent, Belgium 1.78 percent, UAE 1.79 percent and Australia contributing 1.20 percent of total exports. All these 10 countries, along with France jointly account for around 78.5 percent of the country’s total exports of leather products.
