Reuters reported that India imported 2.4 million tonnes of coal from South Africa's Richards Bay Coal Terminal in October 2009, 35% of the total of 6.7 million tonnes.
This compared with September's 1.4 million tonnes, with India accounting for 34% of exports in that month. India has been the biggest single buyer of South African coal this year, accounting for 22% to 35% of monthly exports throughout the year.
It may be noted that South Africa is expected to export around 60 million tonnes of coal in 2009.
