WASHINGTON: India may have to subsidise exports to deplete stockpiles at government warehouses, a US growers’ group has warned. New Delhi will face difficulties in storing the wheat it buys from farmers after it raised the guaranteed price by 8 percent, said Mark Samson, the US Wheat Associates (USWA) vice president for South Asia at the US Wheat Associates. Federal stockpiles may climb to 30 million metric tonnes by June 1, the US Foreign Agricultural Service said in January. Said Samson: “If they do export, there’s going to be some kind of support from the government.” The USWA expects Pakistan to resume imports later this year to bridge a shortfall in domestic supplies. daily times monitor
