India is importing 2,000 ton of high quality silk from China for distribution among weavers in the famous silk centres at Kanchipuram and Benares, Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran said today, reports agency sources.
Replying to supplementaries during question hour, Maran said the weavers in Benares and Kanchipuram have been complaining of shortage of high quality silk for quite some time. ``We are importing 2,000 ton of high quality silk from China which will be provided to weavers in Kanchipuram and Benares,`` he said.
The discussion on the question took an interesting turn when Anu Tandon (Cong) sought to raise the plight of weavers who produce the famed Benares silk sarees. ``But you are never seen wearing a saree,`` a member said as Tandon, a member from Unnao in Uttar Pradesh, sought to make a point forcefully.
