India sees carpet exports rise |
India's carpet industry has seen a major boost in its expert market, with an 18 per cent increase in the number of such products it has managed to sell abroad.
The fiscal year ending in April saw $47 million (£32.3 million) worth of carpets sold abroad, nearly a fifth more than the corresponding period in 2008-09, the Financial Chronicle reports.
Carpet Export Promotion Council chairman O P Garg said: "The growth is mainly due to demand from new markets like Russia, Brazil and Australia."
He added: "We are not getting many orders from the US and European markets, despite the recovery in these economies."
The Indian carpet industry has focused more on the growing markets outside Europe and the US in the last year and Mr Garg expressed optimism that there will be overall export growth of 25 per cent this year.
A recovery in the Indian carpet export trade was noted in February, when textiles minister Dayanidhi Maran stated during the India Carpet Expo in Delhi that there had been an 8.5 per cent rise in trade in January compared with December.
