According to market estimates, India's Jeera production is likely to be around 14- 15 lakh quintals while the carry forward stock is said to be around 2.5-3.5 lakh quintal compared to last year’s 5 lakh quintals.
Adverse weather in December and January in the main growing regions of Gujarat and Rajasthan hurt output and affected the quality of the crop.
According to the Spice Board of India, Jeera exports increased 43% to 29,750 tonnes for the period April to January, 2009. According to market sources, overseas demand will rise in the near-term as the Indian crop is available by February, while crops from other major exporters, Iran and Syria will arrive only by July.
