India’s carpet exports thriving |
BHADOI: India’s carpet industry is thriving despite a decline of seven per cent in exports in the last fiscal, with the current market share at 35 per cent globally.
“In terms of money, global market share of India’s carpet industry is 35 per cent whereas it stands at 65 per cent in terms of number. This had been despite a decline of seven per cent in exports in the last fiscal,” Chairman of Carpet Export Promotion C ouncil Mr O P Garg told reporters here.
Expressing concern over declining number of weavers, Mr Garg said that 1,000 weavers’ centres would be set up in Bhadoi, where six months training would be imparted to 50,000 workers.
“The government would give a stipend of Rs 1,500 each to trainees and Rs 4,500 each to trainers,” he said.
He said that to promote the world famous carpet industry of Bhadoi district, the Union Textile Ministry has increased the number of carpet fairs from two to 20. “Of this five would be held in the country and 15 fairs would be organised in foreign countri es,” he said.
Mr Garg said the Centre has sanctioned Rs 20 crore to construct an exhibition mart in Bhadoi’s carpet region.
