Pepper prices in the spot markets of Kochi in the last one and a month has declined by around Rs. 200 per quintal. The production of spice is expected to be around 55,000 tonnes in India.
Pepper exports from India in the current fiscal (upto November) are lesser as compared to the previous year. In November 2009, India exported 1,500 tonnes of pepper as against 2,100 tonnes in November 2008.
It is important to note that despite a smart performance of the India’s spices export during 2008-09, export of pepper dropped sharply both in volume and value terms.
Import of Pepper into US during January- October 2009 was 53,760 mt comprising of 40,544 mt of black pepper, 5,055 mt of white pepper and 8,161 mt of ground pepper.
Indonesia was the major supplier of black pepper to the US market shipping 17,636 mt followed by Brazil (8,487 mt), Vietnam (8,307 mt) and India (5,425 mt). Indonesia and Vietnam were the most important source of white pepper. India was dominant in supplying ground pepper into the United States (41%) followed by Vietnam (37%).
Mr. V.J. Kurian, Chairman of Spices Board, Ministry of Commerce of the Government of India, has been named as the Chairman of International Pepper Community. He took over from Mr. Odilson Luiz Ribeiro e Silva as Chairman of IPC at the 37th Session of IPC held in Belem Hilton, Belem, Para State Brazil on 3rd December 2009.
