NEW DELHI, Dec 28 (Reuters) - The Indian government is weighing whether to raise the minimum export price for aromatic basmati rice to ensure local supplies and rein in food prices, the Economic Times newspaper said on Monday.
India, the world's second-biggest rice producer, cut the minimum export price of basmati to $900 per tonne from $1,100 per tonne in September.
"The agriculture ministry is making a case for increasing the minimum export price of basmati," the paper said, quoting an unnamed official.
The ministry favoured a hike in the export price to restrict overseas sales after poor monsoon rains hit the summer-sown harvest.
The issue of raising the export price would be examined by the empowered group of ministers on prices, the paper said.
