NEW DELHI, July 9 (Reuters) - India may lower the floor price for basmati rice exports, currently $1,100 a tonne, the Economic Times newspaper reported on Thursday.
"The government will definitely do something for that," the paper quoted an unnamed government official as saying.
The government had banned exports of cheaper rice and imposed a floor price for basmati last year to ensure smooth domestic supplies amid fears of scarcity.
But good harvests of wheat and rice have encouraged the government to gradually ease curbs on grains trade.
Indian rice exporters want the government to scrap or reduce the floor price as they are losing market share to basmati from rival Pakistan.
The exporters favoured a price band of $700-800 a tonne.
