NEW DELHI: At 84.80 lakh tonnes, India imported 5% more vegetable oil in the period between November 2009 to September 2010 compared to last year. Imports totalled 79.95 lakh tonnes in the November 2008 to September 2009 period.

However, in September alone, imports went up by 9% to 9.42 lakh tonnes compared to August in anticipation of peak buys in the festival season. During November 2009 to September 2010, Palm oil imports were down to 58.80 lakh tonnes compared to 59.98 lakh tonnes during the same period of last year. Crude Soyabean oil imports totalled 15.41 lakh tonnes, while sunflower seed oil imports stood at 0. 58 lakh tonnes. A small quantity rapeseed oil( 0.13 lakht onnes) & cottonseed oil (0.13 lakh tonnes)were also made compared to 1.56 lakh tonnes for the same period of last year. Import of Non-edible oils during September 2010 is reported at 18,495 tonnes compared to 40,296 tonnes during the same period last year. The overall import of non-edible oil during November 2009 and September 2010 went down by 10% comapred to the same period in the previous year.

Imports were reported at 365,910 tonnes compared to 407,389 tonnes in the November 2008 to September 2009 period.
