INDIA: Despite ban cotton exports rise |
CHENNAI: Despite a ban on exports, cotton shipments from the country is estimated to have increased this season ending September.
Exports are estimated to be 83 lakh bales (of 170 kg each) against 80 lakh bales last season, according to estimates of the Cotton Advisory Board, a body comprising trade, growers and industry representatives besides Government officials.
A balance-sheet drawn by the board's meet during the weekend has pegged production this year at 295 lakh bales against 292 lakh bales last year, while carryover stocks are estimated to be lower at 40.50 lakh bales (71.50 lakh bales).
More acreage seen
Though the advisory board did not make any estimate on the next season's crop, it has pegged the acreage under the crop higher at 105 lakh bales. Last year, 103.29 lakh hectares were brought under cotton.
According to Mr Chandulal Takkar, partner of Perfect Cotton Company, the area under cotton is expected to be 105.25 lakh hectares.
