New Delhi: Concerned over shortage of fodder because of drought in almost half of the country, agriculture minister Sharad Pawar on Friday said that the government is working on a proposal to allow import of fodder seeds if required.
“We have also expedited the distribution of truthfully-labelled (seeds not certified by government agencies) in drought hit districts,” Pawar told reporters at the conclusion of day-long conference of state agriculture ministers convened to discuss the drought-situation in the country.
Laying out a two-pronged action plan for both the centre and states, the agriculture minister said that crop loans in drought-hit districts of the country could also be rescheduled to help growers. Monsoon rains have been more than a quarter below normal this year, hitting the oilseeds and cane crops, potentially making the country an even bigger importer of sugar and edible oils next year.
“Nabard has been directed to expedite granting of loans for digging shallow tubewells and ground water utilisation,” the minister said. The minister also asked states to prepare a crop plan for the rabi coming season and advance sowing operations to take maximum benefit from the soil moisture that has slightly improved because of late showers.
“States should ensure proper treatment of seeds, for which the Centre will provide necessary help,” Pawar added.
