KOCHI: Henceforth, all coir products requirements of Central Government departments will be purchased exclusively from Coir Board.
This decision follows the request made by Coir Board Chairman to Kamal Nath, Union Commerce Minister. V S Vijayaraghavan, Chairman, Coir Board stated that this orders will help to stimulate the sale and propagation of quality Coir products in the Indian market and to increase the employment opportunity in the country. He also stated that proportionate increase in the use of coconut husk for production of Coir will be beneficial to the coconut growers to increase their earnings. The rate contract with Director General of Supplies and Disposal (DGS&T) will take effect from January 2009.
Apart from promoting export market of Coir and Coir products from India the Coir Board is giving emphasis for the development of domestic market for coir products.
V S Vijayaraghavan, Chairman, Coir Board informed that the coir products intended for sale through the outlets of the Board will be procured from producers. This initiative of Coir Board is expected to boost the domestic market for coir products in a big way and thereby enabling the small scale producers to get a steady market for their products. This in turn would provide more remunerative and full time employment to the working class in the coir sector, V S Vijayaraghavan added.
Coir Board has been taking a number of steps for promoting the consumption of coir and coir products in the domestic market. For popularization of the coir products in the Indian Market, Coir Board is also participating in various exhibitions all over India. Advertisements in leading magazines and product journals are another programme undertaken by the Board for promotion of coir products.
