New Delhi, Sep 10 The government will amend its policy for import of electric energy that will now be subject to a licensing regime.
" Import policy for the electric energy will be amended,"a notification by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has said, adding, import would be subject to licence to be issued by
DGFT in consultation with Ministries of External Affairs, Power and Commerce.
India imports electricity from countries like Bhutan, but the government wants to ensure that when power is wheeled into the country, domestic guidelines are followed.
The change in policy, though not spelt out in the notification, could also mean that power generated in the customs bonded Special Economic Zones would have to follow the same norms if it is wheeled into the domestic tariff area.
India has financed power projects in Bhutan and in turn imports electricity from the neighbouring country.
New Delhi is also keen on enhancing co-operation with Nepal and Myanmar in the area of hydro-electric power.
