Global tea output rises 38% |
Coonoor, April 12 Global tea output is posting an increase in calendar 2010 over 2009. An analysis of the latest information available with the Tea Board and the producing countries shows that in January and February, tea production rose by 38 per cent over the same months of 2009.
In the two months, global tea output has risen by 52 million kg (mkg) to touch 189.1 mkg. The bulk of the increase has happened in Kenya where the output has risen by 25.5 mkg to reach 72.5 m kg. Sri Lankan production has risen by 19.8 mkg to touch 52 mkg.
Indian production comes next at 45 mkg – up 8.2 mkg. This would have been more had it not been for the 3 mkg fall in North Indian production which dipped to 10.2 mkg. South Indian production has increased by 11.2 mkg to reach 34.8 mkg.
Production has declined in Malawi, Bangladesh and Tanzania. Malawi has reported an output of 13.6 mkg (down by 0.3 mkg), Tanzania 5.7 mkg (1.1) and Bangladesh 0.2 mkg (0.1).
In 2009, global production dipped to 1,865 mkg from 1,908 mkg in 2008 principally due to lower output in Kenya and Sri Lanka.
