Ford India Exports Compact Car Figo |
Carmaker Ford India flagged off 1,200 units of its compact car Figo to South Africa on Monday reiterating India as a hub of auto manufacturing, media reports said.
Figos were produced at the company's Chennai plant and will be marketed by Ford Motor subsidiary. The company plans to export over 5,000 cars by the year-end. The company will import 1.4 litre petrol and diesel Figo variants to Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa, said reports quoting a company release.
Figo debuted in March last and the company has so far garnered 24,000 purchase orders for the car. Ford has been exporting to the South African and Thai markets while its peers like Hyundai, Mahindra & Mahindra and Maruti also export cars manufactured in the country.
With an overwhelming domestic demand along with its overseas demand, the company had begun a second shift at its Maraimalainagar plant in Chennai since June to meet the demand, Ford India Executive Director (Marketing & Sales) Nigel E. Wark reportedly said.
