Subject: Exports to India have doubled 'since PM's trip'
EXPORTS from this country to India have nearly doubled this year compared to last year, and there has been a 60 per cent increase in bilateral trade, from $145 million to $250 million, reported High Commissioner of India to Trinidad and Tobago Malay Mishra.

"And we know that this is a positive and very important trend in our trade relationship (and) we want to sustain that," he commented.

He was speaking during a media conference to announce a series of events to commemorate this country's 50th anniversary of independence and 65th anniversary of India's indepen- dence at the High Commission of India, Port of Spain.

Mishra said following the visit by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to India in January, there has been a "paradigm shift" in bilateral relations. "We have seen that many doors have opened for us in terms of our bilateral cooperation," he added.

He said before the cooperation hinged on culture, heritage and diaspora, but they have added business enterprise, investment, agriculture, small and medium enterprises, science and technology, traditional medicine, and information and communications technology. "We are seeing a lot of investors now showing interest in Trinidad," he reported.

He said currently in Port of Spain there are two Indian investors—one in education industries in the field of medicine, and the other in information and communications technology and telecoms technology.

He reported that the two individuals are awaiting the final stages of their investment.

Mishra also noted that a lot of local entrepreneurs are now looking at India as a durable market which is competitive, accessible and affordable.
