Subject: Cotton body sees exports doubling
Chennai, Sept. 7 Cotton exports during the 2009-10 season starting October are expected to more than double to 65 lakh bales (of 170 kg each). Imports are seen lower by three lakh bales at seven lakh bales. An estimate by the Cotton Association of India made after taking into consideration various parameters up to August 31, said the season would see a higher production of 312.25 lakh bales against 292.75 lakh bales this season.

A balance sheet for the next season drawn up by the association showed demand rising by 44 lakh bales to 315 lakh bales.

According to the association, besides imports and production, the demand will be met by a stock of 67.75 lakh bales carried over from this season. Overall supply next season has been pegged at 386.50 lakh bales.

Consumption by spinning mills has been put at 210 lakh bales (200 lakh bales this season), while small units’ offtake is seen at 21 lakh bales (20 lakh bales). Non-mill consumption is seen unchanged at 19 lakh bales and the exports have been added to total demand.

Despite the rise in demand, the next season could see the carryover stock rising to 71.50 lakh bales.

On the production side, the North Zone – comprising Punjab, Haryana, upper and lower Rajasthan – is expected to produce 43 lakh bales (38.25 lakh bales). Output in the Central Zone – consisting of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh – is seen up at 189 lakh bales (171.75 lakh bales). Production in Gujarat is expected to cross 100 lakh bales again after having dropped to 90 lakh bales this season.
