China's toy industry urges India to lift import ban.

Date: 13-02-2009
Subject: China's toy industry urges India to lift import ban
The Chinese toy manufacturers have urged India to scrap the import ban as early as possible to facilitate growth of the industry in both the countries.

"The abrupt ban has caught Chinese toy makers and exporters, as well as Indian importers, off guard and would inflict heavy losses upon every one involved," the Toy Chapter of the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Light Industrial Products and Arts-Crafts said on the country's official website.

On January 23, India banned import of Chinese toys for six months, citing public safety and health concerns.

However, the association claimed that the toys manufactured by them "have been made strictly in line with domestic and overseas quality standards and safety requirements and were safe to play with".

Earlier, state-owned China Daily had reported that Beijing was contemplating dragging India to the WTO on the ban to which Indian Commerce Minister Kamal Nath had said that the ban is compliant with the rules of the multi-lateral body.

Chinese toys dominate a 50 per cent market share in the Rs 2,500-crore Indian toy industry, with an estimated value of more than $500 million in 2007.
