Comprehensive Economic Cooperation
Agreement (CECA) negotiations
- On 20th December 2004, the Hon’ble Dato’ Seri Abdullah H.A.
Badawi, Prime Minister of Malaysia and the Hon’ble Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime
Minister of India agreed to the setting up of a Joint Study Group (JSG) to
explore the feasibility of Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement
(CECA) between the two countries. In accordance with the mandate granted by
the two Prime Ministers, the Joint Study Group was duly constituted in March
2005.
- The JSG Report was submitted in January, 2007 and was adopted by both
the governments on 11th August 2007.
- As per the recommendations of the JSG, negotiations towards
India-Malaysia CECA have been carried out towards Agreements on Trade in
Goods, Trade in Services, Investment and other areas of economic cooperation
as a single undertaking.
- The Commerce & Industry Minister of India has signed an Agreement with
the Minister of International Trade & Industry, Government of Malaysia on 27th
October, 2010 towards implementing CECA between India and Malaysia
w.e.f. 1st July, 2011.
